I believe playing an instrument makes a person a much better student. It all started on my first day of middle school, my 6th grade year. This was the day I would be introduced to a whole new way of looking at music and school. When I started band it was amazing, we learned about the families and the types of instruments in the band world. I chose to play the flute. After I chose it I learned how to put it together (at least it is only 3 pieces) and how to make a sound on it. During this time I was exhilarated to learn something new but at the same time nervous to know how much time and work it will consume.
I knew this was going to be hard and I had to work even more than the average student because I wanted to be in the advanced band. To reach my goal I practiced every day and even looked into a private teacher who could help me one on one. I was so determined to get better and yet so proud at the same time about my time management between school and band. After staying with this routine schedule I started to get very good at flute and very quickly. At this time I was working way harder in school and I was getting better grades. When playing an instrument I think you learn many values that you do not learn otherwise. I believe the lessons and mistakes that are made when playing an instrument are great lessons to put to use in school. When playing on stage I broke through barriers of anxiety of being in front of big crowds and now I could talk in front of my class with ease. After all of my hard work I realized it had finally paid off. I had gotten into the advanced band and the NC Honors Band! During then I had felt as if I had been thrown into a pool of sharks and had to survive. I felt this way because I had to work at a very advanced rate with many other people who were better and older than I was. After getting through that I now understand that picking up an instrument takes a lot of hard work and dedication. All of this has helped me in school and made me a better student. I believe playing a musical instrument of any kind makes you better in school. This I believe.
