So What? Why does the book Prisoner B-3087 matter? Why does the Holocaust matter? The book Prisoner B-3087 matters because it tells the important story of the holocaust. The Holocaust is important to know about because it was one of the worst events in history. The most valuable takeaway I got from reading this book is that this must never happen again. The Holocaust was the mass murder of about six million Jews, gypsies and etc. So many people died; many died from murder, but a lot died from malnutrition. For example when Yanek describes his friends dying from hunger, it sounds absolutely horrible. He describes this on page 161 when he says “He can’t, I told the kapo. He’s sick…. Fred Moaned...” .
Why is this still relevant today? The stories present in this book are still relevant today because the Holocaust left a large impact on our current society. The Holocaust affected the way the Jewish were looked upon as well as the other groups taken into the concentration camps. My book ends with Yanek being liberated by the U.S. army. This is a big deal, this helps change the way the Jewish were perceived. Also it shined a light on the situation and gave an idea to the rest of the world as to what happened during the Holocaust.

The book Prisoner B-3087 by Alan Gratz is about a young jewish boy named Yanek Gruener. His story starts in the krákow ghetto with his family. Yanek starts his story at the age of ten. He then lives there until he turns 13. Typically in the jewish culture when a boy turns 13 they have a bar-mitzvah. Although he was under Nazi rule and it was not allowed, he had one anyway. After being split apart from his parents he was forced to survive on his own through 10 different concentration camps.
In these camps Yanek was tortured both physically and mentally. He went through the impossible. His experience and the Holocaust is very relevant to the modern day issues in Syria. As Jeff McMahan says “Syria is a modern-day holocaust. We must act.”. In Syria the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is gassing his people. This sounds a lot like something that would occur in a concentration camp. Assad also uses starvation against his people, just like Hitler did to those in the concentration camps. I believe what is happening in Syria is very similar to the events of the holocaust. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-theory/wp/2015/11/30/syria-is-a-modern-day-holocaust-we-must-act/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.a25acf02d0dc I am currently reading the book Prisoner B-3087. The book Prisoner B-3087 (by Alan Gratz) is about a young Jewish boy, Anek Gruener who faces the challenge of growing up during the Holocaust. What is the Holocaust? The Holocaust was the mass murder of about 6 million Jewish( also homosexuals, gypsies and black people were killed) men, women and children. The book starts off in the 1930s in Kraków, Poland during World War Two. In fact the Warsaw Ghetto uprising(April 19th-May16th,1943). happened near where Yanek lives. Yanek lives in the Kraków ghetto along with his parents and siblings. He lives there for four years(1939-1942) and after his parents and siblings are taken he is then transferred to the Plaszów Concentration Camp(1942-1943). Yanek endures life in 3 at least 5 more concentration camps besides the Plaszów concentration camp. This happened to millions of people in Germany during WW2.
These events connect to my book because Yanek was apart of the Holocaust. Everytime he made a friend they were killed. This account is true for many survivor accounts of the Holocaust. Every single person in the camps experienced horrible treatment. Many of the prisoners in the camps were transported like they were animals. They were transported in cattle cars where there was barely any space to move let alone breathe. In most cases the Nazi’s would make them dig their own graves before killing them. Some would just kill them for fun, giving them no warning, just killing them. Yanek experienced this hands on and so did the others in these camps. These events will affect the world forever.
